The Superbowl XXXVI halftime show was a three song rock show in the middle of the stadium, starring U2
The stage had to be built on the field during the commercial break following the first half of the game, and taken down during the commercial break before the start of the second half.
Mark Fisher designed the stage so that it could be erected in 4 minutes 30 seconds, and taken down in four minutes.

The stage was built by 400 volunteers from the New Orleans area. The volunteers erected the stage in front of the 70,000 audience in the stadium. The stage reproduced the shape of the stage that Mark Fisher and Willie Williams had created for the U2 Elevation tour - a heart shape with the audience both inside the heart and around the outside. The heart was 80ft wide and almost 100ft deep. Above the stage was a massive diamond shaped lighting grid, with sides over 200ft long.

The heart-shaped stage was surrounded by fans and volunteers. The show began with Bono walking onto the stage through the crowd to the opening chords of Beautiful Day.

As Beautiful Day ended and MLK opened, a silver-grey silk Kabuki curtain 60ft wide and 150ft high dropped in from the roof of the Superdome. ?MLK segued into 'Where the Streets Have No Name', and the curtain formed a projection screen onto which large format Pigi projectors scrolled the names of the victims of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attack on the USA. At the end of the performance, the top of the curtain was released. It fell to the stage, dramatically erasing the list of names as it fell.
